Do you have difficulty maintaining your focus? Many of us do, in part because of the incessant barrage of interruptions that we face each day. It’s a wonder that we ever get anything done at all.
But “do” we must and here are three things that you can put into action to help you stay focused:
1. Use a “to-do” list
Whether you use a digital list or write it down using old-fashioned pen and paper, a to-do list helps you to set your intentions for the day, and plan how you wish to accomplish them. It’s a roadmap that can lead to increased concentration and can help you to focus on the tasks ahead, making them easier to complete. With the myriad of things thrown at us each day that cause us to our lose momentum and yes, our focus too, a to-do list can provide the structure necessary to simply get things done!
2. Turn off the technology
Our digital world has made all of us slaves to the pings and beeps that emanate from our phones and tablets throughout the day. Hundreds of emails and text messages pour in and it can become difficult to ignore them even when it means that you will lose your concentration every time you pause to read what has shown up on your device. A much better strategy is to turn off your notifications or shut down your technology for specific periods of time. While it might seem difficult to do at first, you will probably quickly appreciate the sense of calm that is associated with a technology-free existence.
3. Take periodic breaks
Getting away from your desk for a few minutes to clear your head can be the best thing that you can do to maintain your focus. If at all possible go outside for some fresh air and a short walk, or simply go into the break room or someplace where you can stretch your legs and clear your mind. Taking frequent breaks is healthy for your body as well as your productivity and you will find that when you return to your desk you’ll have a renewed sense of purpose.
Excessive distractions are not only an annoyance that can cause you to lose focus but can also seriously impact the overall productivity and profitability of your company. Engaging in actions that help you to maintain your focus is one of the keys to your success.
